Apple has officially announced the 2007 Insomnia Film Festival.

On Saturday, October 13 at 9:00 a.m. (Eastern Time), Apple will open the floodgates for all high school and college students to create a 3-minute film (using some parameters provided by Apple). The kicker? You have to write, cast, shoot, edit, score, and upload the film in 24 hours.

The films will then be put up for everyone to vote on. The top 25 from that will be screen by industry pros and each member of the team with the winning film will receive a MacBook Pro, Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, and Shake. Snap!

You can register now. Teams must consist of 5 people, all of whom must be in high school or attending an accredited college or university.

Urbines. That's what World Architecture News labels urban wind turbines; neat neologism.

Ben Coleman of Hamiltons Architects says that to optimise power, "integrate turbines into the design of tall buildings in such a way that the contours of the building envelope focus wind on to the turbine blades, much like the casing around a gas or water turbine." They are doing this at Castle house, a 43 storey, 408 unit apartment building at Elephant and Castle in Southwark, London. "Three 9m wind turbines integrated into the top of the building are expected to generate sufficient power to drive the energy efficient lighting to the building, an integral part of the sustainable credentials for the building as a whole."

We had nothing in common in high school; I don't think we said more than five words collectively in the four years we were stuck in that building together. Sure, we're Facebook friends, just because it's cool to add everybody in your graduating class to your friends list when you first join, but that doesn't mean I want to talk to you in the real world.

These meetings always go the same: "ah crap, we both saw each other, now we have to say hi". The stammering conversation that grinds to a halt after you both ask how school's going. Then seeing them a half-dozen times after you say goodbye.

It’s a sign of the times when cameraphone footage of Saddam Hussein’s execution - including the aftermath as he hangs from the noose - has made its way online. Information can no longer be suppressed - not with cameraphones, sites like YouTube, and thousands of bloggers. Even the most sensitive media will always become available online.

While mainstream media avoided showing the whole clip, there’s really no way to hide user-generated videos - the second they hit video sharing sites, they’re saved to thousands of computers, and that means they’ll still be around even if these sites decide the clips are too gory for the public.
